What a wonderful visit we had with Nonna and Poppa. We always love when they come see us, but the visits are never long enough! I think they could stay for weeks and we'd still be sad to see them go. (Although my small house sighs in relief when it's no longer bursting at the seams!)
Living so far away from our families is always a challenge, it often feels like life is lived in fits and spurts. We're making a living here in Maryland, but our lives are in the Midwest and New England. We have made a wonderful little life here, but it's less full than we'd like it to be. When we have family come visit us, or we make a trip home, there is a welcome fullness and depth to our days. There are some aspects that make living away from home better though. When we go home, we feel a bit like rock stars, greeted with whoops and hollers and giant hugs. There's also this vacation mentality, everyone makes an effort to spend as much time together as possible. There are parties, and outings and time off of work. You lose out on some of the simple day to day interactions, and instead gain a week crammed full of time devoted to just being with each other. It's different, and not necessarily better or worse. It's one of those things, just the reality of our situation. We are lucky to have family that makes an effort to come see us, and spend time with us, and we're lucky to be able to make it home frequently. Being a stay at home mom helps with that--I don't have to ask for time off!
For those times in between visits, we have one of Z's favorite inventions, SKYPE! Thank goodness.
But, as always, there's nothing to compare to a real-life warm and snuggly hug!
